A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.


The Scripture of the Month for May is Ephesians 3:14-21. This passage is a beautiful reminder of God's great love for us and His desire to fill us with His power and strength.

The passage begins with Paul praying for the Ephesians, that they would have the strength to grasp the greatness of God's love for them. He says, "I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

Paul then goes on to describe the love of Christ in more detail. He says that it is wide enough to encompass all of humanity, long enough to reach from eternity past to eternity future, high enough to reach to the heavens, and deep enough to plumb the depths of God's own being.

The passage concludes with Paul's prayer that the Ephesians would be filled with the fullness of God's love. He says, "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen."

This passage is a powerful reminder of God's great love for us. It is a love that is wide, long, high, and deep. It is a love that surpasses knowledge. It is a love that can fill us to the measure of all the fullness of God.
